Who are the Wags?

The Wags is a Section of Sandy Lodge Golf Club, formed in 1969 to provide a friendly environment for social and competitive golf, where all are made welcome. We have players of all standards and although taking golf seriously we also value fun and fellowship . We pride ourselves on the friendly and relaxed atmosphere and strive to uphold the traditions that have made Sandy Lodge the Club that it is today.

When?

Apart from match days, we usually have sole use of the first tee from 10.30am to 12 noon on Wednesdays, and we assemble for coffee at around 9.30am, and a draw for partners and starting order takes place at about 9.45am. Play is ideally four-ball better-ball match play with the odd two- and 3-ball depending on numbers. After golf we adjourn to the lounge for refreshments and announcement of winners on competition days. See our Diary for all events – see menu above.

Competitions

During the year there are twelve major competitions for Wags perpetual trophies including a Links Tour trophy played for in Norfolk, but of necessity numbers are limited for this competition.

There are also five or six Texas Scrambles, with small prizes for teams with the best scores, a summer knockout competition and our Eclectic Trophy played over 3 of our six individual competitions during the year.

Matches

Matches are played home and away, against local clubs who provide teams of similar standard, with no handicap restriction. Seniors matches require players to be over 54 years old. All matches are followed by lunch. Wags and Seniors are invited to make themselves available for all Wags and Seniors matches, and although it is not guaranteed, when making a selection for the away match the Captain tries to include those who have played in the home match.

Social

We hold two formal social events each year. The Ladies’ Luncheon, when we wine and dine our wives/partners and Club guests, and the Annual Dinner, a black tie event, when the trophies are presented and the next year’s Wags Captain is announced. At various times during the year we conclude a competition with an informal late lunch. And, of course, every Wednesday we gather for coffee before playing golf and afterwards have tea, or something a little stronger.
